To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake, it is necessary to stand out in the ice cold.

Though we may be experiencing milder, albeit unpredictable winters these days, let’s not forget we still have winter wherever we are in Canada. And winter begs for certain necessities to help get through these days more comfortably and safely. Here are some items to consider.

Let’s start with the obvious…
Hat and mitts – Do not estimate the power and effectiveness of a good fitting hat (think windy days) to keep the heat in and mitts that keep our hands warm and dry for prolonged periods of time outdoors. Pom poms are cute, but get in the way if you have to put your hood on to keep you warm. A practical option: Carhartt Women’s Rib Nit Beanie. Mitts are warmer than gloves, and waterproof is always best: Carhartt Women’s Quilted Insulated Mitts
Boots – Save your shoes for the other seasons and dedicate the winter months to boots only. Though we may rarely need footwear to keep warm at -30 degree C weather nowadays, we certainly need footwear that can endure the ice, snow, and slush in our fluctuating winter climate. Try these: SOREL Women’s Out N About Boots
Coat – A good hood should be a top criteria for a good winter coat. It should also be long enough to prevent the wind from skirting up. Our climate begs for good windshield protection also. Short coats are more versatile for activities, but if keeping your lower extremities warm with a long coat, make sure it also offers movement when walking. Here is a great option for both short and long: The North Face Metropolis Jacket and Columbia Women’s Long Puffer
And the less obvious…
Crampons – Hiking crampons, traction cleats, spikes – are underrated in the world of winter and the great outdoors to improve mobility, especially with changing terrain. Experiment with which ones you prefer, but it’s always a good idea to have a pair on hand. The most versatile ones for varied terrain: ICETRAX Tungsten Winter Ice Grips
Walking poles – Conquer any terrain with ease with a set of poles in toe to enable balance, stability, and safety. A great multi-purpose, adjustable, and comfortable set of poles to start out: TheFitLife Nordic Walking Trekking Poles
Snow pants anyone? Fleece-lined pants? Waterproof pants? How about all three. Find a great option here to provide a great barrier between your legs and the elements: BGOWATU Women’s Insulated Fleece-lined Waterproof Snow Pants
Base layers – Don’t forget that layering up can be the most effective way to keep the cold at bay. A fitted under-layer that is not stifling and won’t restrict movement when packing on the items: INNERSY Women’s Thermal Underwear available in multiple colours.
Warm long socks – Tis not the season for itty bitty socks and exposed ankles. Closemate Cushioned Thermal Socks will keep you warm and protected in all your outdoor adventures.
And don’t forget the neck warmers – Another underestimated garment. Cold air shooting down the neck is not pleasant. Simple yet effective: KOMBI Fleece Neck Warmer
Stay warm and safe this season!
